Entropy Solutions joins RAL Quality Association PCM

The international group, formed in 2004, promotes the use of high-quality phase change material and oversees independent testing of PCMs.

PLYMOUTH, Minnesota – Entropy Solutions, maker of PureTemp phase change material, has joined the RAL Quality Association PCM, a European-based organization established in 2004 to develop standards for the PCM industry.

Stefan Thomann, the association’s managing director, says the organization has two key objectives: Promote the use of high-quality PCMs and influence the political landscape in the European Union in favor of PCMs.

“The RAL Quality Association PCM is most pleased to welcome Entropy Solutions as its latest member,” Thomann said. “I am sure that the association will benefit greatly from Entropy Solution’s vast experience with PCM and we are going to further promote the use of high-quality PCM together.”

Phase change materials are substances that absorb and release thermal energy during the process of melting and freezing. When a PCM freezes, it releases a large amount of energy in the form of latent heat at a relatively constant temperature. Conversely, when such material melts, it absorbs a large amount of heat from the environment. PCMs recharge as ambient temperatures fluctuate, making them ideal for a variety of everyday applications that require temperature control.

RAL Quality Association PCM members include Croda, BASF, Rubitherm, EMCO, va-Q-tec, Salca, global-E-systems, Sasol and Pluss Advanced Technologies. Members and non-members alike can submit their products to the association for independent testing and earn the RAL Quality Mark.

“We are pleased to join RAL and look forward to working with other industry leaders to extend PCM quality and performance standards to North America,” said RoxAnne Best, Entropy Solutions president.

About RAL Quality Association PCM

The association was founded by German PCM makers in 2004 to develop proper quality assurance procedures. The Bayerisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V. (ZAE Bayern) and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE were entrusted with developing these criteria and continue to serve as two of four monitoring institutes independently checking the compliance of certified products.

The association’s objective is to guarantee the quality of the storage material as well as objects containing such storage materials. The fundamental quality criteria are the stored heat as a function of temperature, the number of possible repetitions without any adverse effects and the thermal conductivity of the storage materials which is important for the charge and discharge time.
